Windows : Phobias
These are paintings of windows that were in my home studio while living in West Hollywood.
The barrier of isolation between the inside and the outside. They not only let the light in or out, they allow to discreetly observe the outside. But during the nighttime, I felt like I was being watched. These painting are formal in their execution, painted using vinyl and acrylic paint. They could be used on the set of a television or film production to recreate my home. I thought it was funny to see the windows of my home reproduced in the gallery.
This coincides with a time when I was subject to Panic Attacks, which are overwhealming feelings of anxiety. Perhaps unnatural developments of mental disorder, psychologic dysfunction. These particular blinds are called venetian blinds and are found throughout homes in california and abroad. They are also a significant presence in the genre of film known as "Film Noir", taking it's name from literary noir, crime novels. Made famous by writers such as Jim Thompson, who wrote poetically about Los Angeles as one big crime scene, with crooked cops, junkies, hustlers, grifters, sideways politicians, and women who steal the scene. Anyway, if you've seen one of these films you might have noticed the distinct use of shadow and light, these blinds are omnipresent and I found them to be a potent vehicle through which I would explore these paintings.
The titles of these paintings are based on phobias and perhaps they are illustrative of what that phobia is about. Paranoid has a slight bend in one of the blinds as it does to allow me to see through it.
