Tropical Disaster

Graphic paintings about the weather.

On vacation only to find paradise in trouble, bad weather and flat paintings. Maybe it started as a good idea and then the storm. I was a little surprised with these paintings and they were an important part in my evolution. Los Angeles is a location where actors come to make their mark, vacationers discover this land of wonder, the west, left coast. There is a belief that, the "west" is a place where great things happen. Gold miners came seeking their fortune, settlers came here to escape the Dust Bowl. Today hard financial times, extreme weather conditions and climate change perturb the land of plenty.

These are paintings on stretched viny, material that is sold to protect furniture. I entertain the idea that Los Angeles is the mecca of junkies, hustlers, grifters and sleazy types. Writers like Ellroy, Bukowski, Thompson all found their souls in the darkness of L.A..

The graphic, cut-paste appearance are done with precision and with imperfection. The kaleidescope effect, flattened space and hawaiian shirt kitsch are part of the charm. I love sunsets and they help us see the beauty and forget our troubles. I believe that we need to surrender ourselves to the unknown, everything will be okay.

While I was painting these perfectly imperfect paintings. I found a contrast that came from my composing them on the computer and then projecting them onto my surfaces to be painted. I left holes on unpainted surface where you can see through the painting, the structure apparent and why not, I wasn't trying to hide anything or make you think that Hollywood is real. It all smoke and mirrors, and ugly details.
